I have dreamed of a road that resembles, but is not, Big Ridge Road, the connector between our gated community and the Georgia highway that runs from Fairmount to Jasper and on to Dahlonega. The road in my dreams takes me back home like Big Ridge does, but it involves an impossibly high, steep hill, and most frequently my car is poised at the top and I am going down it, needing to ride my brakes all the way. Sometimes my memory of dreams of it make it feel like I'm ascending rather than descending, or a mixture of the two. Last night, the hill portion was not the only part of this road that I navigated my car through. There was another spot that very much resembled the part of Big Ridge that goes by a little private drive called Elk Overlook. I saw a black family wandering on foot, the various family members, parents, child, grandparents, all looking for something.on or near the road. I had earlier seen a monkey or bear doll, wearing a pine-green full-body covering of some velvety cloth, maybe with a quaint old-fashioned pattern on it, sitting in the middle of the oncoming lane. I remembered this once I had passed the family, and I knew the doll belonged to the child, who had lost it before. I stopped my car or slowed down - sometimes during this whole episode I seemed to be driving in that oncoming lane - and I rolled down my passenger window as I saw one of the family members, maybe the grandmother, walk up beside my car on my right. I told her about seeing the doll where I had been on the road, and she talked with the others, but I could not tell from their discussion whether she had understood me or that they were going back to get the doll.
